See what we can do for your smile!
Not all kids need braces early, but diagnosing a problem at this stage provides a unique opportunity to guide growth in a way that can prevent future orthodonitc complications.
The teenage years are the most common time to get braces for a reason. Treatment is typically most effective during this period of growth, leading to the best results.
Braces aren't just for kids these days. A healthy, attractive smile can contribute to social and professional success. It's never too late to improve your smile, don't let age hold you back!
Worried about how you will look in braces? We have more cosmetic options available such as clear aligners or ceramic braces that are much less visible.
Which is right for you?
Most patients need what is called comprehensive treatment. This refers to a full case of braces meant to straighten and align teeth, as well as correct bite issues. This treatment typically lasts 18-24 months, but may be shorter or longer depending on patient cooperation. We see our patients for regular visits every 4-6 weeks to monitor progress and make necessary adjustments. Upon treatment completion, you will be provided with a set of retainers in order to maintain the results of treatment. As long as retainers are worn as directed, this should be the only treatment you ever need.
If only minor issues need to be addressed, a full case is not always necessary. Sometimes people only need braces on the top, sometimes things can be fixed by a series of retainer adjustments, sometimes we only need to see a patient for 12 months instead of 24. Situations like these would fall under the category of limited treatment and qualify for a reduced fee. Our doctor will evaluate your needs at the consultation appointment to see if limited treatment is right for you.
For younger children we sometimes recommend multi-phase treatment to address specific issues. Phase 1 treatment typically involves an appliance to guide growth in a healthier direction and prepare the patient for comprehensive treatment in the future. This treatment usually lasts about 12 months, followed up by periodic checks to see when the patient is ready to begin comprehensive treatment.
After finishing orthodontic treatment, it is very important to wear the retainers provided as part of treatment. Teeth like to shift back towards where they were moved from - retainers stop this. Should you lose or break retainers please come back for new ones as soon as possible. Not wearing retainers is the #1 reason people end up coming back for another round of treatment. Don't let this happen to you!
Metal brackets aren't the only way!
Teeth are gradually moved using a series of clear aligner trays. Generally, this requires fewer office visits than traditional braces (up to 3 months between visits). Since aligners are removable, you can eat whatever you want - just make sure not to lose them!
Clear aligners are not suitable for every patient, so come see us for a free consultation to see if this treatment is right for you!
There is another clear option available if aligners do not fit your treatment needs. Ceramic brackets are special brackets designed to blend in with your teeth and are significantly less noticeable than traditional metal brackets.
Due to still using a bracket system, ceramic braces are able to accomplish certain treatment goals that aligners are not suitable for.
Upon finishing orthodontic treatment with our office, you will be provided with a complimentary whitening gel kit and instructions. Your retainers conveniently double as whitening trays while keeping teeth straight!
If you would like to continue whitening at a later date, our patients are always welcome to return and purchase additional whitening gel as desired.
During your treatment, avoid hard, sticky, crunchy, or chewy candy and snacks to protect braces, orthodontic appliances, and your teeth. These include hard candies like Jolly Ranchers, chewy candies such as caramels, gummy bears, licorice, taffy, bubblegum, and jelly beans. Also steer clear of nuts and popcorn. Carrots, apples, etc., should be cut in pieces. Also, don't chew on hard objects like pens, pencils, fingernails, and ice.
It is also best to avoid soft drinks during your treatment. We know that might be difficult, but soda, sports drinks, and energy drinks contain acids that weaken tooth enamel. The combination of sugar and acid can cause cavities and decalcification that leaves permanent white marks on teeth.
Brushing your teeth regularly is very important during orthodontic treatment. Teeth should be brushed 3 times a day for a full 2 minutes each time. We recommend an electric toothbrush. Improper dental hygiene can lead to many unwanted outcomes such as cavities, white scaring, and root shortening. If a patient is unable to maintain proper hygiene, we may have to end treatment early to prevent the situation from worsening.
A common misperception is that you don't need to go to the dentist while wearing braces. Not so! It's important to visit your dentist for a professional cleaning and check-up at least every six months during your orthodontic treatment. If you don't have a dentist, please ask us for a referral. We know of several offices that can help you out!
Everyone is a little different when it comes to pain, but braces are not particularly painful for the average person. Teeth may feel a little sore right after adjustments, but this fades quickly as your body gets accustomed to the changes. Some people are more sensitive than others, and to those people we recommend standard painkillers such as Advil or Tylenol as needed.
This depends on the type of treatment you need. Most patients need comprehensive treatment which typically ranges from 18-24 months. This is a pretty safe guess, but we cannot say for sure without seeing you for a consultation so our doctor can evaluate your treatment needs.
We like to see our patients every 4-6 weeks for regular adjustments. A typical adjustment appointment takes about 30 minutes. Other appointments such as bonding the brackets may be longer, and our staff will inform you of the appointment length when scheduling. An appointment may also take longer if there is an unexpected issue to be addressed such as a broken bracket.
Please do not be more than 10 minutes late to your appointment. We do our best to accommodate late patients if we are able, but this is not always possible and we may need to reschedule the appointment.
A missed appointment may slow treatment slightly, but this is pretty negligible as long as it does not happen often. We would appreciate notice that you will not make it if possible, but there is no fee or penalty for missed appointments. Just give us a call to reschedule and we will get you back on track!
Frequently missing appointments can become a different matter entirely. This can slow treatment significantly and is often paired with poor compliance for orthodontic instructions. If we are unable to make progress with your treatment due to poor attendance, we may need to talk about terminating treatment for the sake of your dental health.
Yes. Retainers are a very important part of successful orthodontic treatment. For 6 months after the braces are removed, retainers should be worn whenever you are not eating or brushing your teeth. After this period, we recommend wearing them at night. A good rule to live by with retainers is to wear them MORE OFTEN if they feel tight. Tightness is generally a sign that your teeth are trying to shift and the retainer is correcting that.
Failure to wear retainers as instructed may result in teeth shifting. Depending on the type and severity of this shifting, another round of orthodontic treatment may be necessary in order to fix the issue. If you lose or break your retainers we highly recommend purchasing new ones as soon as possible to prevent shifting! We understand buying new retainers is not fun, but it is MUCH cheaper than doing braces over again.
We are happy to help should you need us again in the future. If teeth have shifted and you need treatment again, set up a free consultation with us. The doctor will evaluate what treatment is needed and we will give you a quote - just like your first visit.
The #1 reason patients come back for retreatment is not wearing retainers. Don't let this be you! Retreatment usually falls under the less expensive limited treatment category, but is far more costly than simply replacing lost retainers.
THERE IS NO WARRANTY - we unfortunately have no way of confirming whether a patient is wearing retainers as instructed once they are no longer being seen regularly. As such, we are not able to offer any form of warranty or guarantee. We always make sure you are satisfied with treatment before removing braces, but it will be your responsibility to follow post-treatment instructions and maintain your results!
