Don't let Halloween treats play tricks on your braces!

Many treats can cause havoc for trick-or-treaters with braces, clear aligners, or other orthodontic appliances. They could cause damage to brackets and wires that might prolong treatment.

Treats to Avoid

Avoid treats that are sticky, hard, chewy, or crunchy.

  • Caramel and taffy
  • Nuts and candies that contain nuts
  • Licorice, gummies, jelly beans
  • Hard pretzels
  • Bubblegum
  • Candy corn
  • Lollipops
  • Popcorn
  • Taco chips
  • Ice

Ortho-Friendly Treats

We recommend foods that are soft and easy to chew. Remember to brush and floss after eating. Even "good" candy can cause cavities.

  • Soft chocolates
  • Peanut butter cups
  • Milk shakes
  • Gelatin or pudding
  • Peeled and thinly sliced apples
  • Ice cream

We want everyone to have fun on Halloween, and we encourage patients to enjoy acceptable treats in moderation. When your orthodontic treatment is complete and you see your healthy and beautiful new smile in the mirror, you'll know it was worth being careful.
